Convergint’s STEP Up for Schools Initiative Completes 100+ Security and Life Safety Projects for Schools Across the United States

Program provides free security upgrades to districts across the U.S.; achieves donation milestone just five years after establishment

On the heels of another successful Convergint Social Responsibility Day, Convergint—a global leader in service-based systems integration—today announced that its STEP Up for Schools initiative has achieved a major milestone. Since its establishment in 2018, more than 100 security and life safety projects have been completed by Convergint and its partners at schools across the U.S.

Convergint launched its STEP (Secure, Train, Educate, and Protect) Up program in 2018 to provide the critical tools and expertise required to help strengthen physical and digital security in schools. As part of this program, Convergint and its partners work to provide districts in underserved communities with interior and exterior security system installations, upgrades, and assessments—including cybersecurity, fire alarm services, physical security, and emergency communications—at no cost to the schools.

“The safety of our country’s children when heading off to school each morning is of deep concern to our colleagues at Convergint, and enhancing school security with the latest technology can provide a vital level of protection for students, faculty, and visitors.,” said Tony Varco, Vice President of Security and Marketing, Convergint. “The impacts of the STEP Up program are meaningful to all of us at Convergint, and we will continue building our program while providing security updates, assistance, and other resources for schools in need–free of charge.”

STEP Up is part of Convergint’s annual Social Responsibility Day, when Convergint closes its 200+ global offices for a full workday to enable colleagues to give back to their communities. This year, more than 500 Convergint colleagues volunteered and upgraded the security systems at 32 schools in cities including Denver, Colo., Atlanta, Ga., and Baltimore, Md., completing this work in a single day. As these projects typically take weeks to complete, Convergint’s efforts resulted in a nearly $200,000 donation in the form of labor, equipment, and partner participation.

“This past school year was our biggest yet and keeping our students and staff safe is always a priority for us,” said John Messina, Headmaster at The Lamb of God School. “We’re grateful to receive this security system upgrade as a donation from Convergint, and we appreciate the extra work they did around the school. From painting and landscaping to moving furniture, Convergint really went above and beyond. I encourage any school that’s interested to apply to Convergint’s STEP Up program.”

Convergint Oceania Partners with Conduent to Deliver a New Transport Ticketing System

Convergint Oceania’s Managing Director Dean Monaghan meets with Ben Carroll the Victorian Minister for Public Transport

Convergint Oceania is proud to announce the success of its joint venture partnership with Conduent Transportation. The partnership has been selected by the Victorian Government to implement an advanced, contactless payment and account-based transport ticketing system to modernise Victoria’s existing myki transport ticketing solution.

The Victorian Minister for Public Transport Ben Carroll announced the new $1.7 billion contract to deliver a more efficient and effective transport ticketing solution so all transport users can safely and seamlessly access, use, and pay for public transport.

Following trials commencing in 2024, improvements will be progressively added to the existing payment options and will allow passengers to tap on and off with their credit or debit card and pay with a digital wallet on a smartphone or smartwatch. The Managing Director of Convergint Oceania, Dean Monaghan, said the decision was a testament to the depth of talent and expertise of the Convergint Australia team.

“As a systems integrator, Convergint works alongside a global network of partners and manufacturers to design, install, and service security, fire alarm, life safety, audio-visual, and building automation solutions for enterprise customers. Our role in the joint venture brings critical local expertise to the delivery of Victoria’s new transport ticketing system.”

A large municipal region in North America was recently challenged to budget a wastewater treatment plant security upgrade in the face of aging infrastructure, escalating capital initiatives, and technical (IT) advancements that demanded integration. Political issues and budget constraints limited their alternatives. This complex initiative had been posted multiple times on shared public tender sites like Bids & Tenders with no success.

Case Study: Asset Tracking Management

Female nurse checking on patient in hospital

As an award-winning healthcare facility nationally recognized for the highest quality of care, a large Michigan hospital is focused on improving practice efficiencies while optimizing the patient experience. With the assistance of Convergint, the hospital set up an Asset Management program. This Michigan hospital is challenged with clinical efficiencies. For example, clinicians report that they consistently have a shortage of IV pumps. Workflows are not optimal, therefore nurses, physicians, and other members of the staff are constantly having to track down IV pumps, causing inefficiencies and interruptions that no hospital can afford. In fact, a survey conducted by the hospital found that clinicians spend an average of 500 hours per year looking for pumps.

Stakeholders at the hospital reached out to Convergint to address asset management concerns, specifically focusing on increasing visibility for IV pumps and critical equipment. Implementing an effective asset management system not only enhances asset availability for staff but also helps hospitals manage their supply chain costs during financially challenging times. By improving visibility, accurate inventory management, and tracking asset lifecycles, hospitals can streamline patient care, optimize procurement decisions, and reduce unnecessary expenses.

Since the RTLS Asset Tracking & Management system went live, staff members are having a much easier time tracking down IV pumps, respirators, and other patient care essentials. Previously, clinicians were constantly on the defense, reactively seeking assets when they were misplaced. Now, they’re able to operate on offense by proactively knowing where their equipment is located. Hospital staff is confidence that the solution is saving them time and improving efficiency—having experienced it firsthand. This has given nurse managers more ownership of their equipment as well as their work processes. To learn more about this Asset Management program, download the case study.

Convergint Highlights its Colleague-Centric Culture with the Lugo’s Legacy Award

Convergint’s colleague receives Lugo’s Legacy Award

Convergint’s greatest strength is its people. Convergint Nation is made up of a diverse network of global colleagues who believe wholeheartedly in its service-first mission and guiding Values and Beliefs. A pillar of Convergint’s annual Unite conference is celebrating colleague achievements through recognition and awards. At this year’s Unite Denver conference, a new recognition, the Lugo’s Legacy Award, was established in memory of Convergint colleague Suzanne Jones Lugo.

Suzanne Jones Lugo
Suzanne Jones Lugo

Suzanne Jones Lugo was a dedicated Convergint colleague of 6 ½ years based out of the NY CTC and most recently had moved to the Leveraged Service Program Management team. She was well known throughout the organization for her commitment to the company and to all the values upon which it was built on. A caring and devoted colleague, Suzanne was passionate about her involvement with Convergint Women Connect and consistently went out of her way to show support for new colleagues, ensuring success in their roles.

Suzanne was always willing to go the extra mile to own her position. She was the true embodiment of “I am Convergint.” In May of 2022, Suzanne tragically passed away, succumbing to a 2 ½ year battle with esophageal cancer. But the impact she had on Convergint is left behind as a legacy for all that were fortunate to have encountered her, and how those colleagues were inspired to impact others.

Because of her role, Suzanne had always attended the annual Unite conference. This year, her “seat” at the conference was passed on through Lugo’s Legacy. This recognition seeks to honor an individual colleague each year by inviting them to the conference in her memory. The 2023 Lugo’s Legacy recipient Karen Mobilio was selected by a committee of colleagues who knew Suzanne well for her deep commitment to Convergint, for her embodiment of our culture, and for living fiercely by our values.

“Karen Mobilio was also a colleague and close friend of Suzanne’s. They worked side by side on many projects and the personal causes Suzanne held so close to her heart. Karen is the embodiment of the Values and Beliefs that Suzanne and we all hold so close. She often referred to Karen as the “Guardian of the culture” here in NY.”

“Karen makes our mission possible, solves customer problems, and is quite possibly the most positive “can do” person I have ever met. No one is more deserving of this honor than Karen and I feel with great confidence that if Suzanne is looking down on us today, she would say “You made the right choice!”

New Convergint Study Reveals Critical Need for Increased Collaboration Between Physical Security and Information Technology Teams

First Annual Benchmarking Report Finds That Despite Technology Advancement, 63% of Physical Security Professionals Are Not Involved Cybersecurity Strategy

Convergint, a global leader in service-based systems integration, today announced the results of its first annual Voice of the Customer Benchmarking Survey, which revealed that the role of physical security professionals has grown increasingly complex, now requiring intensive IT skills in areas like cybersecurity and cloud computing. The survey found that 72% of physical security professionals anticipate that their roles within their organizations will change in the next 1-2 years–with an increased emphasis on emerging technology, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, mobile credentialing, and autonomous solutions. The elevated status of physical security is also evident. Indeed, 35% of survey respondents noted that they report directly to the CEO or other c-level executives, demonstrating how physical and electronic security and risk management are now an organizational and strategic importance.

“There’s no doubt that the role of the physical security professional is changing–the traditional idea of a ‘security guard’ is being re-defined, so as security equipment and capabilities advance, the job has become more complex and tech-centric,” said Robert Van den Heuvel, Business Intelligence Manager, Convergint. “Business leaders must look at security and risk holistically and break down the siloes that exist between cyber and physical security systems—and the teams that lead them—to drive collaboration and keep their people and assets safe.”

Recognizing the absence of peer-to-peer benchmarking in the physical security industry, Convergint Research & Insights conducted its first Voice of the Customer Benchmarking Survey in late 2022—analyzing information from senior, global physical security professionals at the director and vice president level, at more than 70 of the largest industry leading organizations across healthcare, financial services, government, and utilities, among others. The report provides insights on staffing and organizational structure, budgeting and procurement, and trends in innovation and technological adoption.

Key survey findings revealed several areas of opportunity for security teams across all industries, including:

  • Cloud is critical: More than 51% of security respondents reported that they don’t fully understand their organization’s current cloud strategy. Cloud management must be a top priority for all security leaders, and involvement and collaboration between IT and physical security teams must be accelerated to reduce vulnerabilities from cloud devices.
  • Cybersecurity shouldn’t be limited to IT: Only 4% of physical security teams are leading cybersecurity initiatives for their respective organizations, with another 28% teaming up with IT. 63% of respondents noted that they are not involved at all in cybersecurity at their organization. Coordination between IT and physical security teams is critical to prevent attacks on cameras, sensors, and other mission-critical devices.
  • Defining ROI to demonstrate business value: 44% of survey respondents cited their innovation focus as utilizing data and technologies to reduce labor expenses and optimizing workflows and processes–however very few respondents were able to describe how they measure success for innovation projects. There is an opportunity for physical security teams to demonstrate broader business value–from conversations around office and real estate footprint, to office utilization to ensuring a safe work environment.

“The workplace has evolved dramatically over the last few years, resulting in a greater emphasis on health and safety,” said Van den Heuvel. “This is a watershed moment for our industry, given the advanced data that security systems can collect and analyze–physical security is now a highly technical role, focused on managing highly complex systems. By empowering these professionals with proper training and resources and prioritizing cross-team collaboration, security systems can provide tangible business value, in the short- and long-term.”
